I am doing some new stuff with encaustic wax. Here are a couple of new pieces I have done that were at the Po-boy Festival in November. The bottle is wax and the circus box is wax too. The mug shot frame is covered in dictionary pages and aged in various inks.

Oak Street Po-Boy Fest - Sunday November 14th 2010

I am pleased to say I was one of the 30 artists selected to be in the Artist Village at the New Orleans Oak Street Po-Boy Festival which has grown over the past three or so years to be a HUGE event. This will be my third year selling my art at the fest.

Each year is a learning experience as they are growing and learning too. From what I understand this year, the fest will be along eight blocks of Oak Street and the Artist Village will be across the street from Jacques-Imo's Cafe and next door to Frenchy's Gallery - we will be in a gated parking lot.

I am very proud to be one of the artists with a solo exhibit in the window at Gallery 421, located at 421 Columbia St. in downtown Covington, LA. There are many great local artists, in all mediums, within the walls of this very nice and friendly gallery.

The owners, Debby and Steve Wilson are wonderful to me, offering great advice to me which has helped me sell more pieces both in their gallery as well in my art markets and festivals. I have attached some pictures of the pieces chosen for the window. My window exhibit features Storyville prostitutes, NOPD Mugs Shots, New Orleans Cemeteries, Vintage Mardi Gras and Pontchartrain Beach.

Stop by during June 16th to June 26th to see the window exhibit...or any time during the gallery's hours of operation Wednesday-Saturday - 10AM to 5PM and a Second Saturday Art Stroll each month from 6-9 PM.

My Dog Buddy

I had to cancel my January 30th Art Market show due to the serious illness of my little dog, Buddy. I wanted to spend every moment I could with him as he was blind and had cancer. His last few days were miserable with headaches (yeah, dogs get those) from a stroke or seizure and trouble breathing. We ended up having him put to sleep early Sunday morning, January 31st. This is one of the last pictures of me with him. My husband took this picture right before we left our house for Riverlands Animal Hospital in LaPlace LA. I was kissing him and smelling his neck and crying. Buddy was a Katrina rescue we were lucky enough to get from USED DOGS in Algiers,LA. He spent 3 weeks in 8 feet of foul floodwater. He went blind and developed yeast infections that would plague him for the next 4 years. In January 2009 he was diagnosed with lymphoma. We chose to have chemotherapy with Riverlands with Dr. Catherine Garon - who was wonderful. We also had him treated with our regular vet, Dr. Janet Tosh - the best vet. He got the best for the past year - home cooked meals - gourmet foods and all the love my whole family could possibly give a pet. He was loved and he knew it. Buddy was 13. My other Shih Tzu, Bandit, was put to sleep in October at age 16. He had a stroke after suffering from dementia for over a year. So I lost both my little Shih Tzus in four months. Bandit was a good dog too and was with us for ten years. We cried for many days in our quiet home and I could hardly stand it. And could not even talk about Buddy and even writing about him makes me cry. These little guys can just tear your heart out.

So this is in memory of my little guys...Buddy and Bandit... Much love Juliette

Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival This Weekend

It is being held in the Lafayette Square Park right off Poydras St, between Camp and St. Charles on Saturday and Sunday. Gallery 421 Opening Tonight from 6-9 PM

Well, the weather could not be worse...but we are opening the Gallery 421 tonight despite the weather. I am going to be there unless they close the Causeway during the day. I have walked around and looked at the other artists' work in the Gallery...and there are some really beautiful and different pieces here. My Art in New Gallery on Northshore

I am excited to be included in a new gallery of artists in the Gallery 421 located at 421 Columbia Street in old Covington, LA. This is a great building that has been refurbished to include a hundred artists with their original art work for sale - all under one roof. I share a wall with one of my good friends, Robin Daning who paints on white dominos and then creates wonderful assemblages with them. I have taken the summer off...this heat just kills me with headaches. Been working on some new stuff. New Orleans nostalgia of course...my favorite. My wonderful aunt in Gulfport, MS found just the greatest b/w pix of my cousin, brother and me sitting in the big clown at Pontchartrain Beach with the ferris wheel in the background circa 1950s. This is just SCREAMING at me to make something out of it. And one of my brother and me with our Easter baskets - all dressed in our Easter outfits. Just too sweet. That one means nothing to anyone but my brother and me.

Also learning about a wax process called encaustic art...reallllly cool... can only have it displayed in cooler weather....cause I think it would melt big time. Wait till you see this stuff... very nice.

I have applied to the Po-boy Festival in November on Oak Street and the Blues BBQ put on by the Jazz Festival Foundation in Lafayette Square Park in October. Will let you know if I am accepted. Hope so. Also will re-apply to Jazz Fest. That was sooo much fun...and I learned a lot about booth design there.

I will be back at the Arts Market of New Orleans the last Saturday in September, 2009. Come see me there.

Where Am I?

Come see me this weekend at Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park - located at the corner of Carrollton and Claiborne Avenue. There will be over 115 artists there on Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Lots of things for kids to do, great food (got to try the crepes with Nutella and banana) wonderful music and just an all around good time. Some new artists will be there that have just been juried in too!!

Sandra Bullock Assemblage Follow-Up

So, I got to meet Sandra Bullock, shake hands with her and talk to her for a few minutes. She loved the assemblage I made for her, which is pictured in the blog below. I found out, her restaurant in Austin TX is called BessBistro and its logo is the crossed legs with striped stockings of this photograph of EJ Bellocq. And this same photo hangs above the fireplace in her restaurant. So I could not have chosen a more perfect photograph for the piece I made for her.

I was very pleased that she liked it so much, and some day hope to make a trip to Austin and eat at her restaurant to check out my art piece there.

My Assemblage for Sandra Bullock

Tonight, May 15th, at 7 PM is the Warren Easton Sr. High School's Hall of Fame Event. Sandra Bullock is going to be awarded a special plaque for her generous contribution to our school after Katrina's floodwater caused considerable damage. I am fortunate enough to have one of my assemblages presented to her too because she loves EJ Bellocq's photographs of the Storyville prostitutes. I made this piece especially for Ms Bullock and I hope she loves it! It is made on a very old Victorian wall pocket letter holder. It has all New Orleans estate Victorian dress laces, metal and rhinestone buttons, an old skeleton key and keyhole plate and a metal number tag from a hotel. Watch Entertainment Tonight for the media coverage...maybe you will see me!!

Sandra Bullock at Warren Easton Hall of Fame!

Wow!! So get this... Sandra Bullock - the one that is a movie star - who is incredibly generous and kind - has donated A LOT of money to my old high school - Warren Easton Senior High School since Katrina to help us rebuild it. Easton was severely damaged during the flood that occurred after the levees breached all over New Orleans as a result of the Corp of Engineers failure to build and maintain a proper levee system to protect our great city. We have suffered immensely since August 29, 2005 as a result. Sooo...on May 15th, 2009 at Warren Easton at 7:00 PM during our annual Hall of Fame induction, Sandra Bullock will be awarded an honorary Hall of Fame plaque...but here's the surprise that involves ME!!! She is a lover of New Orleans history...and the photographs of EJBellocq and his women of Storyville. So we are going to also give her one of my assemblages of a Storyville woman. I have found a really cool Victorian salvage piece to make this assemblage on, and have been working on this all last week. Stay tuned for a picture of the piece after it is presented to Sandra. Entertainment Tonight will be at Easton that night...so we all will be on national TV too!! Watch for us!

Jazz Fest Right Around the Corner

OK Folks...get ready for a really great time in the city of New Orleans!! It is Jazz Fest time and I am in it!!

Come see me during first weekend April 24th, 25th and 26th in the Louisiana Marketplace tent! I will be selling a lot of NEW stuff that you haven't seen before at the Arts Market of New Orleans - my regular haunt.

And while you are at Jazz Fest, stop and see some of my good friends too - Chester Allen in Congo Square - fab jewelry (he made me a wonderful moonstone bracelet) - Chester is in first weekend too. And in second weekend is my good friend Kiki Huston with her NOLA jewelry - of which I own many pieces - she is in LA Marketplace and another good friend Kerry Fitts of Bayou Salvage who makes darling Storyville clothing... and my friend, Charles Bush who takes the most wonderful wildlife photographs...gotta have one of his too...I have 3!

Those Naughty Women of Storyville

I was fortunate enough to speak again about my favorite subject - The Naughty Women of Storyville. This time I was invited to speak at a conference of Internal Medicine physicians and their wives and/or significant others held at the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter here in New Orleans on February 28, 2009.

What a great time! My husband, Patrick, accompanied me and helped carry my stuff - unfortunately we forgot my camera - so no Kodak moments were had.

My husband was shocked to see the chancellor of LSU Medical School there - someone he works with - so now he has some 'splaining to do at the next meeting as to what his wife does!!

I got some laughs, and I believe they were truly interested in what was said. Even though I sometimes make light of this time of New Orleans history, the life of a girl who ended up as a prostitute during the 1800/1900s was an awful life. Disease, suicide, depression and despair was not uncommon. Men took advantage of them at every turn. And of course every politician and police officer was on the take - so no protection there either. A sad life for sure. They truly were the stronger sex as I have always said about us females. And, as it is even to this day, the "johns and pimps" are not ever arrested it seems...

New Orleans Police Department Mug Shots - Storyville Era

Do you have to buy a present for someone you can never figure out what to get them?

Here is the solution! A mug shot of one of the prostitutes arrested during the early 1900s - circa Storyville era. I have created assemblages using leather book covers, vintage laces and fabrics and Victorian buttons. The arrest details - which were on the back of the mug shot card detail the appearance of the unfortunate, address and pertinent information.

A must have for any collector of New Orleans oddities. The price - $65

Looking for me???
I will be at the Christmas Art Market in Washington Square Park on Sunday December 14th from 10AM to 4PM. It should be a nice art market with some great holiday gifts. This is the first time I have participated in this event. The Washington Square Park is located at Royal and Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans.

After that, my next event will be two days at Palmer Park with the New Orleans Arts Market - corner S. Claiborne and S. Carrollton Avenue. This is something new - TWO DAYS - a Saturday and Sunday. .. December 20th and 21st.

Many of our artists will be there BOTH days, some will only be there one on one of the days. This is the BIGGEST art market in the city, with over 100 local artists - a juried show, hosted by the New Orleans Arts Council.

Come share the holidays with us and see what new items we have.

Save our Cemeteries Soiree

October 18th, 2008

I have been asked to donate to the first live auction for the SOC Soiree this year. There will be three of my pieces offered as a collection: (1) Relics of St. Roch - an assemblage on a really cool ridge tile, (2) my Storyville map from 1912 which is distressed and watercolored and includes two cemeteries and (3) a Bellocq Women of Storyville/Crib Girl piece on a vintage French clay tile that resembles a tombstone.

DIY City Magazine Article About ME!

On July 15th, the online magazine, www.DIYCityMag.com will be all about New Orleans and they were kind enough to interview me and include some of my art pieces. In December, 2007 the editors of the magazine visited the Arts Market at Palmer Park and they saw my artwork. A few months later I received an email from Deb with an invitation to be part of the New Orleans edition.

I am just so excited and hope that you all will read the whole magazine and visit all the vendors featured in it.

Erotic Art Museum in South Beach Miami

So, of course I had to visit this place! When your art revolves around photographs of nudes and erotica ... how could you not run inside and take a peek...

So what did I see...you ask? Some really beautiful paintings of nudes...even an erotic Marilyn Monroe photo...some oriental little pieces and some really bizarre stuff. Oddly enough there was not one of EJ Bellocq's photographs in the collection. There were some really great 1920 to 1950 pin-up photos that I really liked and a few that I have in my own collection. Imagine that, seeing something you own displayed in a museum.

Of course you were not allowed to take photos inside, so this was the best I could do. This museum was rated better than the erotica museum in Amsterdam by my friend, Jim, who was with me...so if you are ever in South Beach Miami and want to visit a really unusual place, take the tour. I thought it was worth it...better that the largest ball of string!

Lazy Days of Summer

I am gone now for the summer, till the end of October, 2008. Way too hot to do Art Markets for me. I may look cool in this picture, but I am melting! I had two fans and a gel cooling bandana around my neck all day and drank a gallon of water.

I am going to Key West FL for 5 days with some good friends and Mr. P (my better half) in June. A place I have always wanted to visit. Staying in a B&B called the Mermaid and the Alligator - sounds cool, huh?

Then coming back, repacking my bags and driving to Savannah GA with my daughter for a business conference. Then we have two bridal showers for my granddaughter and her wedding at the end of September.

My last weekend at Art Market was great! I met all sorts of new people and some of my regular customers came by to visit.

Nic, my favorite customer visited with his girlfriend who has moved here from Jackson, MS. I know he is happy now. We had some new artists set up too. My cousin, Patty and her husband and dog stopped by as well. It was their first time at the Arts Market too.

I will be back at the Arts Market in Palmer Park on the last Saturday of October, 2008 with a bunch of new things. Come see me then. As always, you can contact me thru the blog or my website and email.

Meeting the Madam of the Canal Street Brothel ... Jeanette Maier...

So here is the picture of me with Jeanette Maier, the Madam of the Canal Street Brothel. She was selling her handmade candles, oils and scents at the Bayou Boogaloo Festival Art Market when I met her. Of course I had to have her come see me in my booth...my work is all about Storyville, the Red Light District of New Orleans and its women.

Jeanette was a hoot...she was friendly, outgoing and just delightful. The girl got a raw deal from the Feds and authorities...and exactly WHY weren't any of the men arrested??? Can someone explain that please??? Jeanette, all your sisters want you to publish the book of names...PLEASE.... We wish you luck ... As your bumper sticker says " Give Piece a Chance"

Bayou Boogaloo Festival !

Well here is my booth set up before the heat set in and melted me like the Wicked Witch of the West! I had a new sign made for the outside top of my tent, which I just love. My husband designed it - don't you just love it?

So, the big highlight of the Festival for me was meeting Jeanette Maier, the famous Canal Street Brothel Madam. She was selling her handmade candles and scents at the festival. I bought a couple of candles from her and she gave me one of her red bumper stickers that says "Support the Canal Street Brothel. Give Piece A Chance" I think she was treated badly and I am still waiting for at least ONE of the men involved to be arrested like she and the other women were. She was friendly, charming and I enjoyed meeting her. She came down to my booth to see my Storyville ladies - I told her I was selling prostitution at the other end of the Festival!

I had a good day, other than the heat. My friend Joshua Lee - of Joshua Lee Studio - he takes magnificent photos was across from me and bought a very FINE hat. I had to take a picture of him as it looked so cool on him

Rain Rain Go Away!

Well...it started out as a nice day...but turned bad...really bad in the afternoon. Buckets came pouring down on us at the Art Market. As my friend Caren Nowak, pictured here on the right with me in my booth said "in 20 years I have never had to tear down my tent in the rain". Caren is a photographer of Katrina oddities and grew up in Lakeview and attended Edward Hynes Elementery School with me. It was a Katrina casualty. My other friend across the sidewalk, Jenise McCardle who does Clay Creations had to go home and boil crawfish afterwards. She lives in Bay St. Louis, MS which was the actual epicenter of Katrina's wrath.

We all looked like drowned rats at the end of the day. I was too preoccupied to take a picture of us at the end of the day. I also got a parking ticket for having my car parked on the WRONG side of the street. It was a sad day...

Hopefully next month will be better!

Wanna Come Dance With the Artists?

This is a GREAT deal! Wonderful music, food and an art market on Saturday the 24th.

The Place? Remember where old Mercy Hospital is? I really can't get used to calling it Lindy Boggs Hospital, can you? And now, since the BIG K, it is shut down...so who knows what it's gonna be now. The art market is going to be along the neutral ground in front of the hospital. At least that is where it was last year.

So bring your dancing shoes, and your money for art. And remember too...Parkway Bakery is right down the street on N. Hagan - my mouth is watering for one of those roast beef sandwiches and a Barq's.

Shopping for Victorian New Orleans Photographs

Some of the assemblages that I make are about amazing and strong Victorian New Orleans women. I am always on the hunt for these photographs, diaries and journals.

One of my favorite dealers, Dawn and her partner Cheryl, have opened a really nice antique store on Airline Hwy. Dawn knows what I like for my shrines, assemblages and fetish boxes and will call me when she gets some of my kind of stuff in. She will buy items just for me and has a wonderful little cottage tucked away on Airline Hwy, right by Causeway Loop. Her yard is full of wonderful iron yard furniture, the inside has great furniture and vintage clothing and some of the most amazing jewelry. If you love to shop in a NICE place - no flea market crap here - and get really good bargains - go see Dawn and Cheryl. There is easy parking in front, they are open 7 days a week too. Dawn is there M-F so that is when I go. More Stuff for My Storyville Fetish Boxes

Want to know a great place to shop for antiques and collectibles? Try Breaux Bridge, LA. My favorite Antique Mall is there with a great owner whose mother lost her home in Lakeview with 10' of water for 3 weeks. They tore it down. I know that feeling...been there...done that with so many of my childhood friends from Lakeview. My heart still weeps when I go there to take pictures for the house portraits I paint.

What did I find in Breaux Bridge? Victorian photographs for some shrine boxes. One in particular looks just like my 13 yr. old granddaughter, Kacie. A young girl, in the 1920s holding a cat. A photo soon to be an assemblage named "Kacie and the Cat". Also found some Victorian buttons and religious icons. Some good restaurants and music playing in the street to make to dance. Got an offer to shine my red Clarke shoes from the Shoe Shine Man on the corner of Main Street!

A great place to shop, eat and dance!!

What a great life to have to be able to go places like this and then make assemblages about Storyville, Bellocq and our great cemeteries in New Orleans!

Where Do You Get That Stuff?

People ask me all the time where I get the little bits and pieces that make up the shrines, fetish boxes and assemblages I put together. So I thought as I go on buying trips, I would snap a few pictures of some of my favorite places...I do have many of them right here in New Orleans and I will share those with you in later posts.. but for this past weekend I went to Lafayette, LA with my beloved spouse to attend a conference for the Society of Louisiana Iris. My husband is an avid hybridizer of these beauties for the past 30 years...checkout his website if you love a great Louisiana native plant: http://www.zydecoirises.com/. While he plays with his iris friends, I go junking.

As it so happens, the weekend of the Iris conference coincides with the weekend of the Big Yard Sale at Washington, Louisiana's Old Schoolhouse Antique Mall. Not to be confused with Washington Parish - Washington LA is located just a few miles above Opelousas LA right off I-49 and is very easy to get to from Lafayette. The Schoolhouse is two stories and filled with dealers along with the gymnasium which is also chocked full of good stuff.

But what makes this particular weekend special is that twice a year (April and October) the Schoolhouse invites dealers to sell in the schoolyard. I only go to Washington LA on this weekend because of these dealers in the outside yard. I found, Angela, a wonderful dealer of vintage fabric and clothing from the 1920s. Bought 2 long dresses from the 1920s that are just wonderful, some great handmade doll clothes and a vintage Lodge Hat for the Odd Fellows Rest Association. And several other dealers of old windows, photographs, religious icons and other odds and ends.

The Old Schoolhouse in Washington LA is about a 2 1/2 hours' drive from New Orleans and is worth the trip if you want to combine it with Sunday Brunch at Catahoula's Restaurant in Grand Coteau, right down I-49 towards Opelousas. Catahoula's is my all time number one favorite restaurant. They opened one in Lafayette too! Ate there on Thursday night and it was the best meal I had all weekend!

On my road trip with Jere, we also visited a fairly unknown little cemetery on Washington Avenue. These two tombs caught my eye...and will end up in an assemblage soon....named "Batiste Before and After".

Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery

On April 3rd my photographer friend Jere and I were give access to the Odd Fellows cemetery, located at the end of Canal Street, for a photo shoot. This cemetery is no longer open to the public as it has been the victim of graverobbers and vandals for many years. As some of my posted photos will show, these tombs need love and care to be restored to their once original grand beauty.

As my art depicts decay and neglect, I focus on this...so these photographs will end up as part of an assemblage, shrine or fetish box in the near future.

I am not going to be at the Arts Market this Saturday - March 29th.

But watch for me the last Saturday of April, I will be there for sure! In spot #24 or thereabouts.

"At the Beach... at the Beach... at Pontchartrain Beach..."

Do you remember the days and nights riding the Zephyr at Pontchartrain Beach? I sure do.

One great thing is what I can find when scouting around estate sales and flea markets. The objects I use in making my shrines, fetish boxes and assemblages are all vintage pieces.

These wonderful 1930s Keno boards from a lounge on the Westbank of New Orleans were one great find. Add a vintage photograph of the Zephyr from Pontchartrain Beach and some Cracker Jack trinkets, dice, Monopoly game pieces plus other favorite fun stuff and Bingo! I had a winner. A favorite for many customers. As always...every piece is one of a kind and unique...no two are the same...

"Pretty Baby" Photograph Inspiration

A few months ago at the Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park where I sell my art one of my visitors was an author by the name of Cher from Atlanta. She has written a book about a prostitute, Julia Bulette, who was from Louisiana and was murdered in Virginia City, NV.

Our conversation turned to the Bellocq photographs, this one in particular. The girl's name was Addie Colleen McCarthy and she was 13 or 14 when this picture was taken in 1912. She was born 1898 in New Orleans to an Octoroon or Creole mother who abandoned her. She was adopted by a widow woman named Ellen McCarthy who lived at N. Liberty and Conti Street, which was right in the middle of Storyville. How she ended up as a prostitute is unknown. But knowing what we do about the lifestyles of those days and how young girls were caught in this life so easily, it is not an uncommon end.

You must admit - there is an uncanny resemblence of this girl to Brooke Shields who played the part of Violet in the movie which was inspired by this photograph. And it has been written that of all the photographs of EJ Bellocq's, this one portrays a sense of inappropriateness on the part of Bellocq and reluctance on the part of this girl.

Those Naughty Women of Storyville - Presentation to Southeastern University Students

I was honored to have been asked to speak at Southeastern University in Hammond, LA this week on Tuesday at 12:30 PM to students and faculty about Those Naughty Women of Storyville/The Red Light District of New Orleans. This was in conjuction with the Women in History Month that Southeastern is celebrating in the month of March. My best friend, Kathy from Mandeville and 18 year old granddaughter, Brittanie, attended the lecture with me. They were my beasts of burden and helped carry my displays and equipment as well as provided moral suport in case no one showed up!!

The Sims Library was set up for about 50 people and every seat was taken. I can't help but think that the governor of New York might have had some influence on the success of my talk that day!

The IT Dept. at the University set me up to tape the lecture and powerpoint presentation for their cable channel...so I guess I am being seen over and over by the students that missed it. I am also going to get a copy of the presentation.

My talk included four of the more interesting madams of Storyville: Josie Arlington, Lulu White, Willie Piazza and Emma Johnson as well as a brief history of Storyville and some information about my artwork too.
